Educating K-College Students on Sexual Assault Prevention
Now that it is back to school season, we want to showcase some of the amazing work our Prevention Education team is doing!
Our Prevention Advocates provide education for students from kindergarten through college in Pierce and Kitsap counties, providing information and facilitating conversations on topics like healthy relationships, boundaries, bystander intervention, trafficking awareness, and internet safety. This year, we have already connected with 1,065 students in nine unique school settings.
We are also in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of South Puget Sound (BGCSPS), providing services at the Cheney Family Branch location at Evergreen Elementary. Through that partnership we deliver interactive workshops for kindergarten through fifth grade students. This year, we are also proudly joining BGCSPS staff as they launch their Key Peninsula Middle School BGC chapter for sixth through eighth graders!
We’re also excited to announce a new partnership with Pierce County Juvenile Courts that enables our Educators to begin working with detained youth. Advocates are working hard to foster relationships and create safe conversational spaces for incarcerated kids and teens by helping provide context for safer and healthier relationships both in and outside of the juvenile justice system.
Pictured above is Panda, a stuffed animal used in our work with fifth graders. We introduce Panda as a new friend seeking advice from participating students. Panda asks questions like, “What do I do if a friend loses my favorite toy?”, “What should I do if a friend calls me names?”, and “Do I need to take a friendship pause?” Panda is a great tool to encourage interaction and give age-appropriate educational presentations.
