Recently, we collaborated with community partners on an undercover operation aimed at holding traffickers accountable. While law enforcement focused on the investigative and criminal side, our team showed up with a single purpose: support victim-survivors of sexual exploitation.
Washington State Patrol coordinated the operation, bringing in five local police departments and other investigative units, as well as the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office. At a truck stop in northern Pierce County, detectives connected with people who were determined to be at risk of victimization and exploitation. They conducted interviews to gather information and identify the traffickers responsible for the exploitation, ultimately resulting in multiple arrests and charges
Our Sex Trafficking and Exploitation Program (STEP) Advocates participated as the lead resource for trauma-informed support to the victim-witnesses involved. We offered survivor-centered care, providing critical resources – including hotel stays for multiple victim-survivors, ensuring they had a safe place to sleep.
Some individuals also chose to schedule a follow-up advocacy appointment with STEP. Whether they chose to engage with advocacy again or not, every victim-survivor in the operation walked away knowing that Rebuilding Hope is available to support them anytime they’re ready.
This kind of collaboration is just one example of how all Rebuilding Hope’s programs are survivor-centered. Our team’s sole focus was on supporting the victim-survivors in the room. We also know that survivors are the experts on what they need; abuse and exploitation often position the abuser as ‘knowing better’ than the person experiencing the abuse. Our Advocates offer support but always fully center the victim-survivor’s choice, restoring agency in big and small ways.
We’re grateful to our law enforcement partners for inviting Rebuilding Hope to be part of this effort. When community agencies work together, we’re able to offer a stronger and more coordinated response to violence and exploitation – one that centers the wellbeing of victim-survivors every step of the way.
